Dear delegates,

Welcome to V ZYGMUN 2022! It is a great pleasure to serve as a chair in the United Nations Environment Assembly. I am currently a sophomore at the American School of Warsaw, and it is my first time being a chair in MUN conferences. This is my second year of MUN and I have attended 5 conferences so far: last year’s ZYGMUN, JoMUN, ASMMUN, BERMUN, and ACMUN.

MUN became an opportunity for me not only to learn about global issues and events but also to consider previous attempts and possible solutions to such problems. It helped me widen my perspective and practice having multiple points of view, as you probably all know, you have to represent your delegation’s stance instead of yours.

For this year’s ZYGMUN conference, the main theme is Sustainable Development Goal 17: partnerships for the goals, which aims for strengthening the means of implementation and revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development. The two topics of our committee regarding the theme are “Climate change and displacement” and “Preventing environmental degradation and exploitation during armed conflicts.” The first topic, in particular, comes from the UNHCR Model UN Refugee Challenge. Our final resolution will be sent to UNHCR, and if it wins awards, it will be shared with the policymakers. This is a great opportunity to make an actual impact and hopefully, bring change to the world we live in.

Please keep in mind that we are here to support you, so feel free to reach out whenever you have a question or need help regarding the preparation for the conference. Can’t wait to see you all in April!

Dear delegates of V ZYGMUN 2022,

I am honored to welcome you to not only this conference, but also to the United Nations Environment Assembly. Serving alongside my co-chairs George and Jay, I hope to see you all thrive under our discussions about climate change and displacement, as well as how land is affected by armed conflict.

I come from the American International School of Bucharest, where I am a sophomore. Although this is only my second year of MUN, this shall represent my fifth conference, having attended IMUN, THIMUN, and of course, ZYGMUN.

As advocates for the environment and bright minds for the future, I encourage you to look for ways in which you can create impactful changes, stay engaged, and actively participate in both lobbying and debate. As this year’s conference focuses on working together for a better tomorrow, collaboration will be key during our committee sessions.

For any first-time delegates, please remember that MUN is an experience designed to teach you about the world in a way that is entertaining for you too. Although it can seem overwhelming at first, we will be here to support you so that you can blossom into the delegate you were meant to be. And without further ado, I am counting down the days until our debate finally begins.

Dear Delegates of V ZYGMUN 2022

It is my greatest honor to be serving as a chair in the UN Environment Assembly at this year’s ZYGMUNT MUN. I am a sophomore at Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, Greece. I have been doing MUN for 3 years and ever since I have attended various conferences like ACMUN, ZYGMUN, THIMUN Qatar and DSAMUN. Unfortunately all of them were online. This is my first time chairing and my co-chairs and I, hope to see you all take part in our committee’s fruitful debate.

I find MUN a great opportunity to engage in global issues as well as meet people from all around the world and make long-lasting friendships. Personally I was surprised at how many people have similar interests with me.

At this year’s conference, we are addressing Sustainable Development Goal 17: Strengthening the means of implementation and revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development. During the conference we will be discussing two major environmental issues; Climate Change and Displacement and Preventing the Degradation and Exploitation of Land in Armed Conflicts.

Our first topic is extremely relevant in our times as in 2020 alone, over 30 million displacements were triggered by environmental disasters. Research made by UNHCR suggests that without proper response measures, climate change could cause more than 200 million people to be internally displaced by 2050. Regarding the second topic, armed conflict destroys lives, livelihoods, and creates chaos. Across conflict-affected areas, stories of affected infrastructure, water resource challenges, deforestation, and oil pollution are widespread among the communities. All the above need the collaboration of all Member States and intergovernmental organizations so as to achieve sustainability.

I look forward to seeing you all in April. Please feel free to contact me or my co-chairs if you have any questions.
