Meet the presidency:
Dear Delegates of the Economic and Social Council,
I am delighted to welcome you to this year’s ZYGMUN conference. This year, I have the honor of being your president for this committee.
I am a junior at the American School of Warsaw and have participated in numerous MUN conferences in the past. Most notably, I have attended BERMUN, ACMUN, and a few middle school MUN conferences. This will be my first time as a student officer and I am very determined to make the most of this opportunity. I have always been interested in ECOSOC in particular, as 3 of my conferences have been as a delegate in this committee. As someone who is very much interested in the study of economics, I realize the importance of fostering economic development in ways that are sustainable and acknowledge social and cultural issues. Furthermore, in attending an international school for all of my life, I have come to recognize the importance of international cooperation as a means of solving global issues. I look forward to seeing how delegates channel these concepts into their debate to create constructive resolutions.
The theme for this year’s conference is Good Health and Wellbeing: Ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing for all at all ages, in honor of the Sustainable Development Goal for the month of April. With that in mind, the topics for ECOSOC are: Rethinking universal standards for the treatment of prisoners and Ensuring food security to promote sustained economic development. The first topic is concerned with the human rights of prisoners. Despite the establishment of many treaties to hopefully settle a standard for prisoner rights, there have been many instances in which such international law has been breached, thus calling for reform. I believe this topic presents an interesting opportunity for delegates to explore the ethics and socioeconomic implications behind reforming prisons, maintaining the theme of promoting health and wellbeing for all. The second topic focuses on ensuring food security as a means of promoting sustained development. For both developed and developing countries, stable and safe food supply is a priority. Lack of proper nutrition stunts economic growth and development and furthers poverty cycles. As mentioned in Sustainable Development Goal 3, food security is something vital to establish not only to promote economic development but to ensure healthy lives for all.
I hope you enjoy engaging with the aforementioned topics through fruitful debate and research. Once again, I would like to commend you for taking the time to participate in this MUN conference. Although it may seem challenging at first, MUN is an amazing opportunity to meet new people from different cultural backgrounds and learn from them. I am excited to see you all soon!
Sincerely,
Natalia Sosna, President of the Economic and Social Council

Dear Delegates,
It is with utmost pleasure that I welcome you to this year’s conference. I’m currently a sophomore at the American School of Warsaw. I am from India and have taken part in four MUN conferences before this. This is my first time as a chair and I am very excited. I really enjoy participating in MUN’s because through them I feel as if I can affect, even to a small extent, the world in which we live and relate to the different problems of society. At the same time, I get the chance to meet a lot of amazing people from all over the world and debate with them, thus getting acquainted with different fascinating cultures and enthralling ways of thinking.
The theme of our conference is focused on good health and well being. It is indisputable that a lot of attention should be paid to the improvement of all aspects of contemporary life, to ensure that future generations will have a better world to live in with access to basic medical amenities. Both topics of the ECOSOC are connected to this theme. Coming up with effective solutions to these issues would definitely improve the circumstances in which many people live. I believe that as a generation of young adults that are paving the path for their futures, we will have a very unique take on the issue.
I hope that when you come here in April, you will make unforgettable memories and learn something new. I look forward to meeting you all in person and seeing how you will tackle the issues we have chosen for you.
Sincerely,
Pranit Dua, President of the Economic and Social Council.
