Meet the chairs:

Dear Delegates,
I am honored to serve as one of your chairs for this upcoming ZYGMUN conference. This year I began 12th grade at the American School of Warsaw, and my third year of MUN. Last year I attended ACMUN, a MUN conference in Thessaloniki, Greece, which I enjoyed greatly. I also acted as chair of the Political Committee at last year’s ZYGMUN conference. Having these experiences, I know both what I want from a chair as a delegate, and what I need to do to improve on my previous chairing performance. By ensuring the committee is organized, coherent, and fueled by a positive atmosphere, I hope I can help create a delegate experience you enjoy as much as I did. I’ve spent most of my life living in Warsaw, but I also lived in Maryland in the United States for four years.
This year, the Environmental Committee has a great opportunity to engage in meaningful debate, as the theme of this ZYGMUN conference, ”Children and Youth: Fostering Peace and Security for Future Generations”, fits perfectly into the Environmental Committee, which will deal with issues that pertain to long-term effects, thus affecting future generations. The topics of the Environmental committee this year include the issues of harm caused to children by smog in urban environments, and limiting the use of harmful pesticides that contaminate food and water causing negative health effects in youth and future generations. These issues are highly prevalent in the world today. Smog affects many countries, including Poland, which unfortunately experiences some of the worst smog in Europe. The issue of harmful pesticides is one that primarily affects third-world nations, but to massively detrimental ends, having the capacity to cause sickness and death in vulnerable groups, such as children, and birth defects in future generations.
In the Environmental Committee, it is vital that delegates are prepared to engage in thought-provoking rhetoric, in-depth problem solving, and must be able to effectively communicate their ideas effectively to others.
I look forward to both seeing all the delegates in April, and sharing the educational, dynamic and, above all else, fun experience that ZYGMUN will be.
Sincerely,
Alex Buckley, Chair of the Environmental Committee.

Dear Delegates,
I am extremely excited to be one of your chairs at ZYGMUN this year. I am a sophomore at the American School of Warsaw and this is my fifth year actively participating in ASW's Model United Nations program. I have been a delegate in ten conferences in Bucharest, Budapest, Thessaloniki, Berlin, and Paris. In PACMUN 2017, I had the honour of co-chairing. I really value the friends and the experiences I made during these conferences as I believe they have given me an open mind as well as more opportunities for my future. Students that do MUN learn to cooperate, actively listen, speak articulately, and negotiate. This skill set will ensure success for those who wish to change the things in the world they believe are unjust and unacceptable. One of my jobs at ZYGMUN will be to provide those experiences to you, our delegates. I hope to create a comfortable environment where all delegates feel confident enough to participate in debate and collaborate.
This year, one of our topics is "Reducing the major health risks to children caused by smog in urban environments." This topic directly relates to me since I live in Poland where we have had terrible air quality for the past few years, particularly in the winter. The second topic is "Limiting the use of harmful pesticides that contaminate food and water consumed by youth." As you may have noticed, these issues refer to younger generations in order to keep with the theme of ZYGMUN 2019 which is "Fostering Peace and Security for Future Generations".
As a delegate, it is crucial for you to come prepared and sure of the policies you are representing. Furthermore, come with solutions you believe would be efficient and flexible to accommodate all member states to ensure that these issues are being fully dealt with.
Sincerely,
Annika Julien, Chair of the Environmental Committee
