Dear Delegates,
Hello! I am very honored to welcome you to the Disarmament and International Security Committee,
In the past few years, the international community has been increasingly confronted with the recruitment and exploitation of youth by terrorist and violent extremist groups. Numerous reports have shed some light on the extent of this disturbing phenomenon. This year’s conference theme, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions: Promoting just, peaceful and inclusive societies is a topic that is very significant and directly related to our committee’s topic. By having a fruitful debate, we are hoping to promote international cooperation to effectively tackle this pressing issue.
This will be my tenth conference and my first time serving as a chair which I am very excited about. I have always been very passionate about the disarmament committee because I loved debating on nuclear weapons, it was always fun because of the controversy. On a personal note, I am a sophomore in ASW. Before moving to Warsaw, Poland last year I lived in Turkey. I love spending time with my friends, reading, and politics.
Lastly, for first-time delegates, we all have been there. Debates can be overwhelming sometimes but try to see this as an experience, MUN will help you with presenting your ideas and you will get to see how a debate works. Hopefully, your virtual experience will allow you to make more connections and improve your skills.
I am looking forward to seeing all of you on zoom!

Melisa Cakim,
Chair of the Disarmament Committee

Dear Delegates,
I began my MUN experience in 2017 at a conference hosted by my school, and I have been attending various conferences each year ever since. What keeps me coming back to MUN as an activity is the real need for problem solving and critical thinking skills, which are integral not only in this context but also in real life, regardless of what career you decide to pursue. To me, MUN is an activity that can prepare people to face many of the challenges in the world, which is what makes it so valuable.
This will be my third conference where I am going to participate as a chair. I decided to apply as a student officer at ZYGMUN to enrich my overall MUN experience. Although I had chaired before in other conferences, I had done so mostly in smaller committees, so I am looking forward to experiencing chairing in a larger committee.
The theme for this year's ZYGMUN conference is "Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions: Promoting just, peaceful and inclusive societies (Sustainable Development Goal 16)", and I am particularly looking forward to the debate on protecting national security through cyberspace. In the past few years there has been a focus on themes pertaining to the Sustainable Development Goals at MUN conferences, which, although the topic may seem overused, holds significance to us, as young people who are about to enter a world in need of changing.
I look forward to seeing you at the conference!

Chair of Disarmament Committee

Dear Delegates,
It is my greatest honor to serve as your chair for this year’s conference. I am a passionate MUN-ner from India and have attended and chaired conferences in America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, with ZYGMUN being my 13th. On that note, I look forward to bringing my experience to the committee and assisting delegates in any way that I can.
This year, the conference focuses on Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions: Promoting just, peaceful and inclusive societies. Given today’s political and economic climate, this theme is extremely relevant. The two topics of this committee, the threat of security in cyberspace and recruitment of minors by terrorists, have been ongoing. Hopefully, after productive and collaborative discourse, the committee will have solutions to promote justice, peace, and inclusivity in the world. I look forward to working with all of you this year!

Shemoila Saini,
Chair of the Disarmament Committee
