Senior School Nicosia Dear Delegates, Welcome to the ZYGMUN 2021 conference and the Political Committee! I am honored and very excited to be chairing this year's Political Committee as cohesive and peaceful relations are crucial. I am a Greek Cypriot-American living in Cyprus attending a British International School in grade 11. Outside of school I enjoy horse jumping, karate, singing and art, not to mention MUN of course. I started attending MUN conferences when I lived in Qatar when I was 11 years old and since then I have attended ACMUN in Greece three times, serving on the Human Rights Council, Security Council, the Historical Committee as a delegate and will be chairing this year's HRC. I have also attended BERMUN in the fall of 2019, serving as an ambassador and delegate of the Legal Committee and chaired the 2020 Fall conference’s HRC. Additionally, I have served as the President of the Human Rights Council at the Virtual ZYGMUN conference in April of last year. MUN gives us an opportunity to collaborate, debate and compromise with students from all over the world that have different viewpoints to our own and would otherwise be strangers. Through the topics selected in each committee we are able to further our understanding on complicated issues in order to solve global problems. This year the ‘Sustainable Development Goal 16’ topic is more relevant than ever due to the unpredictable and volatile global state. This year we have seen a breakdown of institutions and more severely democracy, as well as clear issues in judicial systems across the globe. This is why it is so important to come together and discuss the prevalent issues we are all facing or will have to in the future. Furthermore, this committee’s issues highlight pressing issues like the drug trade and a breakdown in democratic relationships. I am excited to see how all of you will navigate these issues and look forward to hearing all the fruitful debate. Zoe Stylianides, Chair of the Political Committee |

Anatolia College Thessaloniki Dear Delegates, It is my pleasure to invite you all to the 4th annual ZYGMUN conference! I am an IB1 student at Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, Greece and I am from Greece and the UK. So far, I have attended 8 MUN conferences, including last year’s ZYGMUN conference, and I can fairly say that each one has been a fascinating experience. Over these past few years participating in MUN, I have learned that such conferences have much to offer us, such as the opportunity to exercise diplomatic skills, take on leadership roles, learn how to speak confidently and of course meet many people from all over the world! Other than diplomacy and international relations, I enjoy travelling, dance and spending time with my friends. Being one of the chairs of the political committee, is a position I highly appreciate as I hold this committee very close to my heart. It was the committee I started my MUN journey with and a committee which I have actually been a part of several times, thus feel confident about the way it functions. For the aforementioned reasons, I hope to guide and help you throughout the duration of the conference, resulting in a fascinating debate on both of the topics of our agenda; “Promoting political stability through equitable development initiatives in the Caucasus region” and “Mitigating political instability by combating the narcotics trade”. I really hope you all have the best time during this four day conference and hope it helps you grow as learners and as global citizens. I look forward to meeting you all in April.
