Dear Directors, Student Officers, Admin, and Delegates of the ZYGMUN IX conference,

Welcome to the ninth annual ZYGMUN conference! It is an incredible honor to serve as this year’s Secretary-General, following my role as Deputy President of the General Assembly last year. I am currently 18 years old and entering my senior year at the American School of Warsaw. Having participated in various roles over the years – including as a delegate, student officer, advocate, and secretariat member at 10 different conferences – I have witnessed MUN from nearly every possible perspective. This year, as I enter my fourth and final year participating in High School MUN, I hope to use my previous experiences and genuine passion for MUN to make this year’s ZYGMUN conference the most memorable and impactful one yet.

This year's topics and debate will revolve around the conference theme “Balancing socio-economic equity with global prosperity,” combining the ideas of UN Sustainable Development Goals 8 and 10. As innovation, growth, and prosperity continue to be prioritized all across the globe, we have seen impressive technological and economic advancements in the past decade. However, these achievements continue to leave many behind, exacerbating disparities both between and within nations. Today, the upper class continues to accumulate wealth and reap the benefits of global growth, while millions still struggle to meet basic needs; if left unaddressed, such inequalities will only continue to fuel cycles of poverty, political instability, and social unrest. As such, the need to address deep-rooted disparities and work towards a balance between socio-economic equity and prosperity has become more urgent than ever. During this conference, we hope delegates will collaborate to develop innovative and effective solutions for the various aspects of this theme that will be focused on by different committees.

Lastly, on a more personal note, I would simply like to encourage all ZYGMUN IX participants to make the most out of their time at this conference. Beyond debate and politics, I’ve seen ZYGMUN impact my own and many others’ lives in various positive ways over the years – fostering friendships, teaching resilience, and much more. As this will be my last ZYGMUN conference, I’m tremendously grateful for the many lasting memories I have formed here, and I only hope that the experience will be as impactful for you as it has been for me these past 4 years.

I wish you all the best and look forward to seeing everyone in March!

Sincerely,

Dear Directors, Student Officers, Advisors, Admin, and Delegates of the IX Zygmunt Model UN Conference,

Welcome to the 9th annual ZYGMUN conference. Serving as your Deputy Secretary General along side Louis Rydygier in this year’s ZYGMUN conference is a great honor of mine. I am a junior at the American School of Warsaw, and while I was born and raised in Slovakia, I have lived in Poland for 9 years now. With my 5 years of MUN experience with over 8 conferences completed, I have been a delegate, admin, chair, president, twice on the secretariat team, last year as the Head of Administration and this year as the Deputy Secretary General.

This year’s debates will center around the theme of  “Balancing socioeconomic equity with global prosperity” which highlights the increasing challenge of ensuring that the advantages of globalization, technological advancements,
and economic growth are balanced more equally across different communities and income groups.  This conference theme, especially in the year 2024, can inspire delegates to explore new technological advancements and economic growth to promote peace, uphold justice, and ensure a more equitable future for all. The 9th year of ZYGMUN’s goal is to ignite cooperation and developments that can influence peace and justice, enabling societies to break down barriers and fulfill their potential.

In my free time, I love to watch and make movies, read self help books, listen to good music (Lorde, Amy and Frank), play tennis, and obviously, learn the rules of procedure and point out personal pronouns in delegate’s speeches.

I look forward to working with you all in your committee sessions, with delegates, chairs and guests.

Dear Directors, Honorable Student Officers, Distinguished Delegates, Administrators, and Guests,

In March, the highly anticipated ZYGMUN conference will return for its ninth iteration, hosted by the American School of Warsaw. It is my profound honor and privilege to serve as one of your two Deputy Secretaries General, and we, as the Secretariat, are committed to making this conference as enjoyable, educational, and international as ever! Guided by the two UN Sustainable Development Goals that aim for reduced inequalities and sustainable economic growth, this year’s conference theme is “Balancing socio-economic equity with global prosperity,” introducing a multidimensional and contemporary global issue that can be debated from many different perspectives in varying scopes. Now more than ever, increasing economic uncertainty represents a driving force behind some of the world’s most complex and profound challenges, including extremism, authoritarianism, and the exacerbation of inequalities through exploitation and greed. A fair, sustainable, and stable economy can help build the foundation for healthy and peaceful societies, which I have experienced myself, having lived in Ukraine during the Euromaidan period, and seeing ever-increasing inequalities foster authoritarian attitudes and a poorer quality of life.

I have lived in France, Ukraine, Germany, the U.S., and Poland, which has made me aware of many issues that society is facing, whether they are cultural, economic, or political. And yet, these experiences have taught me this more than anything: When united behind a common goal, there is nothing we cannot achieve, which is precisely the point of Model UN conferences. Beyond politics and international relations, I am passionate about football (Hail to the Commanders!) and traveling.

I can’t wait for ZYGMUN IX, and I hope that this conference will not only provide you with an opportunity to solidify your debating, negotiation, and critical thinking skills but also immerse you in the incredibly welcoming, friendly, and social environment that we call MUN.

See you in March!

Louis Rydygier
Deputy Secretary General

President of the General Assembly

Dear Directors, Student Officers, Administrators, and Delegates of the IX ZYGMUN Conference,

This year, the American School of Warsaw will be hosting the ninth annual ZYGMUN Model United Nations conference. I am incredibly honored and proud to be serving as the President of the General Assembly for this years conference.

I am 11th grade student, at the American School of Warsaw, and this will be my second year at ASW. I am half French, half from the US, and have previously lived in countries like Kosovo, Turkey, DRC and Kenya. This will be my fourth year of MUN, and I have attended seven conferences over the span of those three years, and served as Deputy Secretary General of an old school’s conference. My favorite parts about MUN is the travelling, the connections and all of the people that you meet and connect with.

This years conference theme is very special, combining the Sustainable Development Goals of 8 and 10 together to create a conference theme that urges delegates to examine both an economic and social aspect to our world’s growth. Collaboration and critical thinking are very important in this topic to further come up with solutions during committee sessions.

I am looking forward to meeting you all at IX ZYGMUN!

Maëlie Galarza
