Dear Delegates,
I am so incredibly honored and excited to be your chair for this ZYGMUN VIII Security Council committee!! As a little about me, I am in 10th grade this year, new to ASW, and Warsaw. I am half-French, half from the US, and I have lived in countries across Africa, Europe, and Asia. As you can guess, I enjoy traveling, but also going out with friends and meeting new people. I first tried out MUN when a schoolmate introduced the club to the school. Since then, I have attended around 6 conferences, been deputy secretary general, and took over my previous school’s club for a few months, acting as chair. From all of these experiences, I can say that I have loved participating in every single conference, meeting new people, and creating connections that will last me a lifetime. I believe that my motivation for this year's conference stems from that. I agreed to chair the Security Council this year for a few main reasons. I believe that with delegates that are dedicated, and interested (and don’t abuse their veto), the Security Council is one of the best committees to be a part of. Since it has a decided number of 15 delegates, everyone will be able to participate. This is unique because in a lot of other committees, not everyone's opinions and stance is heard, and that only leads to one sided debate. Secondly, we, as the Security Council, are few to be able to actually have binding resolutions that promote safety and security. And in reality, the Security Council is incredibly important. It is a place to peacefully debate and reunite some of the biggest world leaders and international power-houses. Which is something that gains significance more and more in the world of today. My role to play is to foster a fruitful and inspiring debate, while also helping delegates create connections and relationships. While I want us to have fun, my wish as a chair is to also come up with legitimate solutions, pass resolutions and get everyone involved in making our world safer. I look incredibly forward to meeting you, Maëlie Galarza |
Welcome Delegates!
I am so excited to be able to serve as a chair for the first time at this upcoming conference. I joined the MUN program at my school in 6th grade and have participated in 5 conferences since then. I remember walking into my first conference and being met with the irrational fear that all my research wasn’t enough. For some reason I thought my coaches were expecting 11 year old me to be just as much of an expert on food insecurity as the real UN officials. Walking into my committee to see other little kids and not 40 year old diplomats was a reality check. This realization made it easier for me to raise my paddle confidently and fully take advantage of the experience. None of us are experts, but all of us want to make the most out of our time. I encourage you to make speeches, ask questions, and submit amendments because even if you aren’t all-knowing, that is the best way to learn. As a chair I hope to create a safe environment where your passion for the topic will outweigh any nerves you might feel. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to seeing you all soon! Alina Sharaf Chair of the Security Council |
