Dear delegates,

I am honored to welcome you all to this year’s ZYGMUN conference’s Special Political and Decolonization Committee (GA4). I am an 11th-grade student at Isikkent High School in Izmir, Turkey. This will be my tenth MUN conference overall, and my second conference as a Student Officer.

I joined MUN in 9th grade and going in I had never thought it would be one of the best choices I have ever made. MUN taught me the importance of cooperation, open-mindedness, respect, and mutual understanding when approaching global issues critically. Alongside MUN, some of my hobbies include watching crime shows, trying new activities with my friends, and all sorts of sports.

This year in GA4 we will debate two pressing international issues that require international cooperation to be solved, the “Phenomenon of Brain Drain” and “Ending Statelessness”. For three days you will have the opportunity to meet and work with eager delegates, such as yourself, from around the world. Not only will you make new friends but, you will also benefit from peer learning and broaden your horizon significantly. To be chairing you through this process will be a great privilege for me.

It is my greatest hope that you will make the most out of this experience through effective preparation before the conference and enthusiastic participation during the conference. I look forward to meeting you all this April!

Dear Delegates,

Having the honor to serve as a Chair in Model United Nations programs, has been one of my most treasured experiences of my school life! The MUN conferences mean a lot to me, since they have helped me learn so much about the world, when it comes to politics, which is a subject I am very interested in. They have also offered me the chance to feel heard and valued, something that sadly, does not always come hand in hand with being a girl.
As I am a 16-year-old student, this is my third conference as a Chair, and fifth overall. It feels like a lifetime ago when I first joined the MUN world, though. Back then, I had no idea how far it would take me on a personal, as well as an educational level; I never knew how necessary it is for the youth to discuss global social, political, and environmental matters, before I started taking part in these conferences.
If the youth doesn’t speak up, who will? It is our responsibility to act. We are the future, the ones that can change the world, and resolve the issues that were caused.
That is why I urge all of you to be active during the conference, as well as the preparation before it. I encourage you to do as much research as possible, to gain all the necessary knowledge regarding the issues of the committee.
By doing this, you can change the world too. You can play your part towards the creation of a brighter future.
I look forward to seeing and hearing from you all!

Yours sincerely,

Xenia Mitsi
Chair of the Special, Political and Decolonization Committee
