David Lam American School of Warsaw Dear Delegates of ZYGMUN 2022,
This year’s ZYGMUN will be my fourth MUN conference in which I, along with my co-chairs, will honorably be chairing the Security Council.
In light of recent events, the Security Council will be debating on the situation revolving around Ukraine. As such, in consideration of this topic’s recency, I encourage all of you to remain updated on previous, ongoing, and forthcoming events and news that will be surrounding Ukraine’s Russo-Ukrainian crisis to be well prepared for the debate.
And, although you will be representing your member state’s positions, I encourage you to prepare and engage in the debate to not only remain informed about current global affairs but to engage in a diplomatic, intriguing, and relevant debate that will generate thought-provoking ideas, and new solutions to be inquired.
David Lam President Security Council
Sam Namhiyas Hisar School İstanbul It’s of great delight serving in the Security Council in this year’s ZYGMUN conference. Firstly, I would like to talk about my interests. I’m Turkish-Spanish, currently living in Istanbul, Turkey. I enjoy playing tennis and skiing. I am currently a 10th Grade Student at Hisar School. I attended my first conference 5 years ago as an Admin. Even though I couldn’t get along with MUN at first, after a 2 year break I’ve continued to be a part of MUNs around the world. Since then I have participated in a variety of conferences, both in Turkey and abroad. I’ve had a lot of memorable conferences in Turkey, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany.
I view MUN as not only a simulation of the UN, but also a simulation of life. It requires many important qualities such as good debating skills, together with perseverance, patience, and confidence. MUN not only improves your english skills but also a vast array of skills such as political understanding, writing, speech making, great judgment and discipline. As someone who wants to study political science and economics in the future, I view MUN as one of the best “Pre-college experience” that I could have.
Although ZYGMUN 2022 will be my third chairing experience, I’m specifically excited as it would be my first time selecting an agenda item to be debated in an MUN conference. Both the conflict in Ukraine and South Sudan are major world issues that should be further discussed. 2022 started with the heated debate between the Russian Federation and other NATO countries regarding a Russian military buildup near the Ukrainian border. The western world has come to an alarming state of a surprise attack on Ukraine. The situation in South Sudan is also severely escalating, but still the world’s attention is on other conflicts. Even though being the youngest country in the world, South Sudan has entered a brutal civil war only two years after its independence. Soon we are going to mark the 10th anniversary of the start of the civil war in South Sudan, only to realize that the conflict has created the world’s largest refugee crisis after Syria. The war has caused mass ethnic violence, infrastructure failures, 4 million external and 3 million internal refugees. Thus, the conflict in South Sudan repeatedly needs urgent global attention.
Both themes connect with this year's theme and the UN refugee challenge. The situation in Ukraine and South Sudan need essential global partnership, which I believe the partnership and skills that all delegates purvey during this year’s ZYGMUN Security Council will create an outstanding experience for everyone.
